Death Note is a japanese manga written and created by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The story is about how a high school student finds a supernatural notebook.

Light Yagami is a 17-year-old honor student who resents crime and injustice in the world. One day, while looking out his classroom window, Light notices a notebook falling from the sky. After class, Light goes to examine the book. He sees that it's labled 'Death Note'. He looks inside and finds some rules.




The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

This note will not take effect unless the writer has the subject's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.

If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the subject's name, it will happen.

If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack.

After writing the cause of death, the details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.



At first, Light thinks the whole thing is some kind of clever prank, but he takes it home anyway. Light tests the notebooks claims on a crimanal that is featured on his T.V. Much to Lights surprise, the book lives up to what it says. He dissmisses the incident as a coincidence and continues on. However, Light is tempted to try again when he witnesses a man attempting to rape a girl. This time, he wrote the cause of death: being run over by an oncoming truck. It does happen, and Light is shocked. At first, he's apalled that he just killed two human beings. But soon, Light concludes that what he did was right. They were rotten people, and rotten people should die.

Light goes home and in a week, he's written countless names of villains in the Death Note. Then, the Shinigami, or death god, who created the Death Note came to visit Light. The shinigami claimed his name was Ryuk and told Light that it was he who created the Death Note. Light says he is not surprised by the death god's appearence, in fact, he was expecting it. Light asked Ryuk what his punishment was for using the Death Note. Ryuk simply replied that there was none.

Skeptical, Light asked what the catch was. Ryuk told him that the human who uses the Death Note can go to neither Heaven or Hell, and that was all. Ryuk then asks why Light has written so many names.

"I'll show them that there is someone who will pass judgement upon them!" Light exclaimed. "I will cleanse this world! And I... will be the god of a new world!" Ryuk is entertained by Light's ambitions and decides to stick around to see how things turn out.

Eventually, the massive rate of heart attacks to criminals reaches the ears of the International Police Organization. They hired a detective known as 'L' to track down whoever is causing the deaths. L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" (derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a game of psychological cat and mouse between the two begins...
