SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds is reportedly irked that Marc Ecko, the man who bought his record-setting 756th home run ball, has launched an on-line poll to determine its fate. Ecko, a fashion designer known for pop culture pranks, is asking fans to vote on line whether to give the ball to the Hall of Fame as it is, or whether to brand it with an asterisk to denote steroid suspicions and send it to Cooperstown, or whether to blast it into space. "He's an idiot," Bonds told the San Francisco Chronicle. "He spent 750,000 dollars on the ball and that's what he's doing with it? What he's doing is stupid." Ecko bought the ball for 752,467 dollars in an on-line auction that ended on Saturday. Ecko is asking fans to make their choice on the website www.vote756.com. Bonds also said he was in the dark as to whether he is entering his final days as a San Francisco Giant. Those days could be numbered given that he is sidelined with a toe injury at present. "Ask (Giants president) Peter Magowan," Bonds said when asked about his future with the team. "He hasn't told me anything. I don't know why you keep asking me. I don't own the team." The Giants do not plan to address Bonds' future until the end of the season. However, there is growing speculation that the team, in last place in the National League West, will cut ties with the 43-year-old to build for the future.
